Cold water is the real killer as it stresses the body and heart. Fatalities after shipwrecks in cold waters are more often due to COLD WATER RESPONSE than drowning. The initial immersion into cold water is often very stressful, causing blood pressure increase, hyperventilation which in turn may lead to drowning since the victim is unable to control its breathing. Further, it may lead to tachycardia. This stress may cause cardiac arrest and death in susceptible, especially in old people and children. The dangers to passenger lives start when they are called to the muster stations for evacuation. They are exposed to heavy winds, rain or snow and might have to wait for hours on deck. Wet clothing reduces insulation by 90% (cotton) and precious body heat is used to heat and evaporate the surroundig wetness. In other words, they may already be cold and uncomfortable before they also possibly have to swim in the sea. |
